Social Media Engagement Rate Calculator

Calculate engagement rate using followers or reach for Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

100% client-side. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.

Followers are a vanity number; engagement is the one that predicts sales. Engagement rate measures how many people interacted with a post — likes, comments, shares, saves — relative to your followers or to the people who actually saw it. It tells you which content earns attention, whether an influencer's audience is real, and when your account is being throttled by the algorithm. This calculator computes engagement rate by followers and by reach for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X, per post or per period, with a saves-and-shares weighted view for commerce accounts.

The formulas

  • By followers = (Likes + Comments + Shares + Saves) ÷ Followers × 100 — the standard for comparing accounts and vetting influencers.
  • By reach = Engagements ÷ Reach × 100 — the honest measure of how good the post itself was.
  • Weighted (commerce) = (Likes + 2×Comments + 3×Shares + 3×Saves) ÷ Reach × 100 — because saves and shares signal intent to buy or recommend.

A post with 480 likes, 36 comments, 22 shares and 60 saves on an account with 12,000 followers that reached 9,500 people: 4.98% by followers, 6.3% by reach.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose the platform and enter followers (and reach, if available from Insights).
  2. Enter likes, comments, shares and saves for the post, or totals for several posts and the post count for an average.
  3. Read the rates and the weighted score; compare posts side by side.
  4. For influencer checks, enter their followers and average engagements from the last 10 posts.
  5. Track weekly; falling reach-based engagement means content, falling follower-based engagement with stable reach means the algorithm is showing you to fewer people.

Benchmarks (indicative, 2026)

PlatformTypical engagement by followers
Instagram (small business, <10k followers)3–6%
Instagram (50k+)1–2%
Facebook Page0.5–1.5%
LinkedIn (company page)1–3%; personal profiles higher
X0.5–1%

Smaller accounts naturally engage higher; an influencer with 80,000 followers and 0.4% engagement, or comments that are all emojis, likely has a bought audience.

Content that engages for Indian small businesses

  • Reels and short video of the product being made, packed or used — reach far beyond followers.
  • Before/after and process posts for services (tailoring, repairs, interiors).
  • Local and festival hooks — a Diwali countdown, a monsoon offer — drafted with the social media post generator.
  • Clean product photos from the background remover and photo resizer.
  • Replies: answering every comment within an hour roughly doubles comment volume over time.
  • Which AI-driven content tools pay off for a small shop, and which do not, is covered in AI for the small shop in 2026.

From engagement to sales

Engagement is the top of the funnel; the middle is the click to your WhatsApp link or website, and the bottom is the order. Track the whole path with the marketing funnel calculator, and for paid posts judge by ROAS rather than likes.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure by followers or by reach?

By reach to judge content quality; by followers to compare accounts or vet influencers. Report both when you can.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

3–6% for accounts under 10,000 followers; 1–2% for larger accounts. Saves and shares matter more than likes for a business.

How do I check whether an influencer's engagement is real?

Compute engagement on their last 10 posts, read the comments for substance, and compare follower growth spikes with post dates. Under 1% on a mid-size account with generic comments is a warning sign.

Do views count as engagement?

Views (plays) are reach, not engagement. Count likes, comments, shares and saves; for video, add watch-through rate as a separate metric.

How often should I calculate it?

Per post for content decisions, weekly for the account trend, and per campaign for paid content.
