Google launched AI Mode in India in 2025 — in English and Hindi — and AI Overviews now appear on the majority of informational queries. "How to rank in AI Overviews" and "GEO (generative engine optimisation)" are the fastest-growing marketing searches of the year. For a local business the good news is that the fundamentals still decide who gets cited; the bad news is that sloppy listings are invisible faster than ever.
What AI search actually cites for local queries
When someone asks "best CA for GST filing in Indore" or "electrician near me open now", the AI answer draws from:
- Google Business Profile — hours, categories, services, photos, Q&A, and above all reviews.
- Structured data on your website (LocalBusiness, Product, FAQ schema).
- Consistent information across your site, GBP, Justdial, IndiaMART, Instagram.
- Content that directly answers questions — short, factual, with numbers.
- Recency — profiles and pages updated in the last few months.
It does not care about keyword density, "SEO articles" of 2,000 words, or backlinks from directories.
The five signals that matter now
1. Reviews with specifics
"Great service" does nothing. "Got my GST registration done in 3 days, ₹1,500, very responsive on WhatsApp" gets quoted. Ask customers for specifics; the review request builder drafts a message that prompts details and includes your review link and QR.
2. Complete, current Google Business Profile
Every field filled: services with prices, products, hours including holidays, attributes (UPI accepted, wheelchair access), and 5+ new photos a month. Answer every review and every Q&A within 48 hours.
3. Schema markup on your site
Add LocalBusiness (with openingHours, priceRange, geo), Product for what you sell, and FAQPage for your common questions. The schema generator and FAQ schema tool produce valid JSON-LD to paste into your page head.
4. Titles and descriptions that read like answers
AI systems lean on your title tag and meta description to decide relevance. "Sharma Electricals — Electrician in Kothrud, Pune · 30-min response · UPI" beats "Home | Sharma Electricals". Draft and preview with the meta tag generator and SERP preview.
5. One page per service, in plain language
A page titled "AC repair in Kothrud — ₹399 visit charge, same-day" with a price table, area list and FAQ is exactly the shape AI answers extract from. Ten such pages beat one long "services" page.
What to stop doing
- Buying reviews (Google's 2025–26 crackdown removes them and suspends profiles).
- Stuffing city names into every sentence.
- Posting AI-written blog posts with no local information; they don't get cited.
- Changing your business name on GBP to include keywords — that's a suspension trigger.
A monthly routine (60 minutes)
| Week | Task |
|---|---|
| 1 | Post 5 new photos and 1 update on GBP; check hours for upcoming holidays |
| 2 | Ask 10 recent customers for reviews with the QR/link; reply to all reviews |
| 3 | Add or refresh one service page with prices and an FAQ; update schema |
| 4 | Search your top 5 queries in AI Mode; note who's cited and what they say that you don't |
FAQ
Does AI Mode replace the map pack?
No — the local map results still appear, and AI answers usually cite businesses from it. A strong GBP feeds both.
Do I need a website if I have a good Google Business Profile?
For hyperlocal services, GBP alone can work. A one-page site with schema and prices noticeably increases citations.
How long until changes show up?
GBP edits reflect within days; website schema and content typically within 2–6 weeks.
Is Hindi content useful for AI search?
Yes. AI Mode serves Hindi answers; a Hindi FAQ on your page can capture queries English pages miss.
