Price tags are the quietest salespeople in the shop and the first thing a Legal Metrology inspector reads. A good tag shows the MRP, the offer price, the saving, the size or weight, and a code the counter can scan — printed in a grid so a rack of 60 items is labelled in ten minutes. This generator lays out price stickers and shelf tags in standard label sizes (A4 sheets of 24/40/65 labels, or 50 × 25 mm thermal rolls) with MRP, sale price, discount percentage, batch or SKU, barcode and your logo, exported as PDF or PNG from your browser.
What must appear on a price label
| Element | Rule or reason |
|---|---|
| MRP (inclusive of all taxes) | Mandatory on pre-packaged goods under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules; never sell above it |
| Offer / selling price | May be shown alongside MRP; must not obscure the original MRP on the manufacturer's pack |
| Net quantity | On packaged goods (grams, ml, pieces) |
| Batch / lot, date of packing or manufacture, best before | On packaged food and cosmetics (FSSAI and Legal Metrology) |
| Packer / manufacturer name and address, consumer care contact | Packaged goods |
| Barcode / SKU | Optional but essential for scanning at the counter |
| Country of origin | For imported goods and e-commerce listings |
Loose goods (vegetables, hardware by weight) need a rate per unit displayed, not an MRP. The label checklist for food, including the veg/non-veg logo, is in FSSAI rules for small food businesses.
How to use the generator
- Pick a label layout — A4 sheet (choose the grid to match your stationery: 3 × 8, 4 × 10, 5 × 13) or thermal 50 × 25 / 100 × 50 mm.
- Enter items: name, MRP, offer price (or a discount %), quantity, batch, SKU. Paste a list from a spreadsheet for bulk.
- Toggle barcode (EAN-13 or Code 128 from the SKU — see the barcode generator), logo, and the "Save ₹X / Y%" line.
- Preview, then download PDF and print at 100% scale (no "fit to page").
- Reprint only changed items; the list is saved in your browser.
Discounts on tags
The saving line is computed for you: MRP ₹1,299, offer ₹899 → "Save ₹400 (31%)". Stacked or conditional offers ("extra 10% on bills above ₹2,000") belong on a shelf talker, not the sticker; check the effective percentage with the discount calculator and make sure the counter software applies it the same way. Under Consumer Protection rules, a "was" price must be a price you actually charged, and "up to 50% off" needs a real 50% item in the range.
GST and the tag
MRP already includes GST, so a tag never shows tax separately for consumers. When the slab on an item changed under GST 2.0, manufacturers were allowed to re-sticker; retailers must sell at the revised MRP shown on the pack. For your own packaged products, compute the inclusive MRP from cost, margin and rate with the GST calculator and gross margin calculator; the reverse arithmetic is in How to calculate GST from MRP.
Practical tips
- Use removable adhesive labels for products you may return to suppliers.
- Colour-code offer tags (red for clearance, green for new) so staff can find them at re-pricing time.
- Print the SKU in text too; barcodes get scratched.
- For festive resets, plan the re-tagging day into the festive season checklist.
